I want to travel and do IT work?
I have been in the Information Technology field for 10 years. I ‘ve successfully done everything from server support/setup, help desk, ip phones, PC repair, printers, networking…you name it. I have professional certifications and also a college degree. I am good at speaking and can also write well.
I have been having this enormous itch to travel and also do IT work. Let me explain–I am 55, single, and live in the rural midwest (Nebraska). I have always had a strong interest in other places and other cultures. I was actually a farmer before I got into IT (I still farm on the side), so never had much opportunity to travel. However I have made some trips in connection with my job responsibilities (Las Vegas, Atlanta, Los Angeles) and have found that I really enjoy going to other places and working in the big city.
My farming experience has made me very much a self-starting, self-managing, take the initiative, problem solving type of person.
I have been steadily employed during the past 10 years at several companies in my area. I am currently working for a very nice family-owned company that pays me fair wages for my area and also treats me quite well.
I find myself lately thinking more and more I want to see the wider world out there before I get older and don’t have the opportunity. As I mentioned, I live in a rural area and–while many might consider that idyllic–it does have its drawbacks. I want to do more in life then talk about my kids and what to serve at the church dinner next Sunday and how Nebraska is doing in football. I also find that after 2-3 years at a company, you get rather ho-hum seeing and working with the same people all the time.
When I was in the larger cities I mentioned earlier, I found myself thinking “gee it would be great to be doing IT work in these places”. Working for a few weeks or months at one location and then moving on to some other city (or country) to take on another project.
So let me ask: Are there jobs in the IT field that would allow me to apply my skills and also travel? If there are, would I regret leaving my current safe, secure (but rather boring) environment? Is it weird for someone my age to get a hankering like this? Thanks for any replies, and if you require more info please ask.
